Pre-Production and Planning
We created these highlights for the Rugby team as we were planning to film the game anyway for a University project and offered to create a short, social first highlight reel for them. This project did not take too much planning, we just rented out a camera and tripod from the University and headed to the game.
Execution and Challenges
The challenge of filming a rugby match was great fun! We followed along with the action the best we could and tried to get shots that showed the emotion of the game as well as crowd shots to give some character to the highlights. We made the mistake of filming in BlackMagic RAW when neither of us had any experience with handling RAW files. This meant that the files were around 100GB in total and had a milky look as they were linear and raw, with the knowledge I have now I have subsequently fixed the footage but at the time I had no experience with colour management of raw files so the final product looked good, but could have looked far better if we had managed the files correctly.
Final Result and Reflection
As previously mentioned the final product could have been better if we had better knowledge of colour management. However, the client was still very happy with the final product and it received over 5,000 views on the teams Instagram. The challenges of following along with live sport was very exciting and really piqued my interest in going into sports videography.
